Brand History
Baltijas Dzips, also styled as Baltijas Džips, was founded in 1995 in Riga, Latvia under the leadership of Felix Tontegode. The company focused on limited-production off-road vehicles, primarily in pickup body style, with a goal of manufacturing 200 vehicles per year that was never achieved. With a team of only 12 employees, the venture remained a small-scale operation throughout its existence.
Key milestones include the 1995 founding followed by development of the main model from 1995 to 1996. Initial design work took place in the Stils design office, where Dmitrijs Parfenovs served as designer under the Pilots project. Body part manufacturing was transferred to the Baltic states during this period. Felix Tontegode later improved the design and obtained certification for small-scale production between 1996 and 1997.
The company ceased operations in 1997 after producing approximately 10 vehicles. This brief timeline marks Baltijas as one of the minor players in post-Soviet era automotive attempts in the region.

Baltijas Džips Logo Evolution
1995–1997: Original Logo

The Baltijas Džips logo was used throughout the company’s entire existence without any redesign. It served as the sole visual identity during the 1995-1997 period and appeared on all official materials related to the brand.
- Design: Bold stylized black initials BD encapsulated in a rectangular frame
- Colors: Black lettering combined with a red frame
- Changes: No evolution or updates occurred
- Context: Created for a small Latvian off-road vehicle manufacturer focused on utility applications
The red rectangular frame in the Baltijas Džips car logo symbolized strength and solidity appropriate for an off-road vehicle brand. Below the emblem appeared the full company name Baltijas Džips LTD in a simple sans-serif typeface. This straightforward industrial approach matched the practical nature of the BD-1322 model it represented.
The Baltijas Džips symbol directly reflected the brand name with BD standing for Baltijas Dzips. Its assertive style aligned with the company’s short-lived attempt to establish a presence in the Baltic automotive sector through the Tantor vehicle project.
The company’s legacy remains that of a minor Latvian manufacturer that contributed to local vehicle development efforts in the mid-1990s. Though production numbers stayed low, the BD-1322 Tantor represented an independent attempt at creating versatile off-road solutions for agricultural and municipal use in the region. The Baltijas Džips badge continues to appear in historical records of European automotive ventures from that era.
