LuAZ Brand Overview
Lutsk Automobile Plant operated under the short name LuAZ in Lutsk, Ukraine. The brand specialized in automobile manufacturing with a focus on off-road and amphibious vehicles. It remained active as an independent brand from 1965 until 2006, when it was fully absorbed and the LuAZ name was discontinued, though an unrelated Ukrainian startup, Luaz Motors, revived the LuAZ brand to build small electric vehicles starting in 2022.
Brand Timeline
Construction of the factory began in 1951. The plant opened on August 25, 1955 as LARZ, the Lutsk Automobile Repair Plant. It was renamed LuMZ, the Lutsk Machine Building Plant, on September 3, 1959.
In 1965 the facility began assembly of the ZAZ-969 and was renamed LuAZ, or Lutsk Automobile Plant. The company joined the AvtoZAZ group in 1975. It assembled its 100,000th car in 1982 and presented the LuAZ-1301 compact SUV prototype in 1989. Production reached a peak of 16,500 cars in 1990.
Privatization was approved by the Ukrainian government on May 31, 1993. The company was removed from the list of strategically important enterprises on July 27, 1998. In 1999 an 81 percent stake was acquired by the Ukrprominvest Group. Production of older models stopped in 2002 and the LuAZ-1301 concept was launched that same year. Ukrprominvest formed the Bogdan Corporation in 2005, bringing LuAZ into the new corporate structure. The LuAZ brand ended in 2006 after Euro-2 regulations halted the LuAZ-1301 project; the name was later revived in 2022 by the independent startup Luaz Motors, which has since built small electric vehicles under the LuAZ name.
LuAZ Logo Evolution
The LuAZ car logo underwent several updates that mirrored key moments in the company’s development from its first civilian vehicles through its final years under new ownership.
1967 – 1978: First Major Logo

This LuAZ symbol was introduced with the launch of the 969 Volyn series. The design used high contrast and simplicity to convey speed and precision.
- Design: Stylized Cyrillic letters with sharp angles and dynamic swoops inside an oval track
- Colors: Black and white
- Changes: First major civilian logo for the newly renamed LuAZ
- Context: Coincided with the start of civilian production and the 969 series
The LuAZ emblem from this period remains a classic representation of the brand’s early independent identity.
1978 – 1998: Three-Dimensional Logo

The updated LuAZ logo was introduced during a period of modernization and the release of the LuAZ-969M Volynianka. Its three-dimensional appearance suggested robustness and technical skill.
- Design: Three-dimensional Cyrillic letters with gradient shading and angular lines
- Colors: Monochrome
- Changes: Shift from flat oval design to dimensional rendering
- Context: Used throughout peak Soviet production and export years
This version became the longest-used LuAZ car symbol in the brand’s history.
1998 – 2000: Intertwined Metallic Logo

Following privatization and acquisition, LuAZ introduced a new logo that featured metallic elements and symmetrical forms.
- Design: Two intertwined shapes with metallic appearance on an elliptical backdrop
- Colors: Metallic tones with clean text
- Changes: Moved away from Cyrillic-only design toward more contemporary styling
- Context: Reflected the post-privatization corporate changes
The metallic LuAZ badge signaled the company’s transition toward a new structure while retaining its core identity.
2000 – 2006: Final Corporate Logo

The last LuAZ logo incorporated a complex metallic symbol and reflected full integration into the new corporate group.
- Design: Stylized automotive component shape with sharp angles and circular nexus
- Colors: Metallic sheen with solid green text
- Changes: Replaced previous designs with a symbol that merged engineering precision and elegance
- Context: Marked the final visual identity before the LuAZ brand was phased out
This emblem appeared as the company prepared to assemble vehicles for other brands and eventually ended the LuAZ name.
LuAZ Logo History and Legacy
LuAZ logo history parallels the company’s journey from a repair plant to a recognized Soviet-era off-road vehicle maker. Each redesign aligned with major corporate milestones, from the launch of the 969 series to the final integration into larger ownership structures. The various LuAZ logos captured the brand’s emphasis on rugged utility and technical capability.
The evolution of the LuAZ symbol offers a visual record of Ukrainian automotive manufacturing during the late Soviet and early independence periods. Although the original Soviet-era brand ended in 2006 (with the LuAZ name later revived by the unrelated startup Luaz Motors in 2022), its compact off-road vehicles and distinctive logos continue to represent a unique chapter in automotive design.
