Workhorse Brand History
Workhorse traces its manufacturing heritage to 1898 in Union City, Indiana, when the original Workhorse Custom Chassis lineage began as one of the first suppliers of bodies to the automotive industry. During the 1950s the company built bodies for GM P-series Step Vans, and from the 1960s through the 1990s it produced thousands of bodies for buses and step vans. The modern company was founded in 2007 by Stephen Burns as AMP Electric Vehicles with a focus on converting vehicles to electric drive. Navistar established the Workhorse Custom Chassis brand in 1998.
In 2012 Navistar decided to sell its Workhorse subsidiary. AMP Electric Vehicles acquired the assets of Workhorse Custom Chassis in March 2013. On April 16, 2015 AMP Electric Vehicles officially renamed to Workhorse Group Incorporated. This corporate rebranding marked the company’s transition to its current identity as Workhorse Group.
