Genesis Brand History

Genesis is a South Korean luxury vehicle brand established as a standalone entity in 2015, previously operating as a premium model line under Hyundai since 2008. The parent company is Hyundai Motor Company. A concept was introduced in 2007 and the first Genesis sedan launched in 2008 as the Hyundai Genesis, with the second generation appearing in 2013.

The brand focuses on the premium and luxury segment targeting international markets with sedans, SUVs, and electric vehicles. Genesis surpassed 1 million cumulative sales by August 2023.

Genesis Logo Evolution

  1. 2008–2015
  2. 2015–2020
  3. 2020–Present

Genesis has refined its visual identity over time to reflect its growing independence and luxury positioning.

Genesis logo

The first Genesis logo appeared during the period when the name was used as a Hyundai model range. This winged crest represented stability and the premium essence of the Genesis line within Hyundai. In most markets the winged badge was used while US models carried the Hyundai circular “H” badge.

  • Design: Geometric crest placed between two short, thick wings with smooth lines and sharp angles
  • Colors: Dark blue and gray shades with bold white uppercase lettering and thin white outline inside perimeter
  • Changes: Shared some branding with parent company
  • Context: Used while Genesis operated as Hyundai premium model range

2015–2020: First Independent Brand Redesign

Genesis logo evolution accelerated when the brand became a standalone luxury division in 2015. This redesign coincided with Genesis separating from Hyundai and adopting a more distinctive upscale identity.

Customer research in the US showed around 80 percent of Genesis buyers preferred the winged logo over the Hyundai “H”, validating the visual separation. Mike O’Brien, Hyundai VP, described the winged badge as a visual mark of premium promise.

  • Design: Refined contours of the winged badge with thinner and longer wings
  • Colors: Maintained dark blue and gray color palette with added gloss to central element
  • Changes: White outline of the crest removed and contours refined
  • Context: Marked the transition to independent luxury brand status

The most recent Genesis emblem maintains the core winged design while adopting modern proportions. This version is used exclusively on vehicle hoods, steering wheels, and interior elements.

Wings in the Genesis symbol represent innovation, progress, and pursuit of excellence. The current winged badge serves as the sole primary identifier with no continued use of the Hyundai “H” as primary branding.

  • Design: Further refined winged crest with modern proportions and sharp-edged uppercase lettering without traditional serifs
  • Colors: Silvery shades with subtle bluish and blackish nuances
  • Changes: Simplified to winged emblem only with updated typography
  • Context: Used after Genesis had established itself as an independent luxury brand

The Genesis car logo has evolved alongside key brand milestones from its time as a Hyundai model range to its current status as a standalone luxury division. Each update to the Genesis badge has supported the brand’s growing independence while preserving the winged crest that defines its visual identity. The Genesis logo history reflects the company’s journey toward a distinct premium positioning in global markets.
