Tank Brand Overview

Tank is an off-road SUV marque owned by the Chinese manufacturer Great Wall Motor (GWM), headquartered like its parent in Baoding, Hebei. The name started as a model line rather than a brand. In July 2020 GWM’s premium division Wey showed the Wey Tank 300 at the Chengdu Auto Show, a body-on-frame SUV built on a new “Tank” platform that GWM described as its dedicated architecture for hardcore off-roaders. The Tank 300 went on sale in China that December.

The 300 sold well enough, and fit awkwardly enough inside the car-focused Wey lineup, that GWM chairman Wei Jianjun spun it off. In March 2021 GWM announced Tank as its own marque, separate from Wey, dedicated entirely to off-road vehicles. The Tank 300 was rebadged from Wey to Tank the same year.

A second model followed quickly: the Tank 500, a three-row, full-size SUV revealed at Chengdu in August 2021 and launched in China in March 2022. It became Tank’s flagship for a time, offered with a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 alongside turbo-petrol hybrid and diesel options, and went into production not only in China but in Thailand, Pakistan and Uzbekistan for export markets.

GWM kept building out the lineup. The Tank 400, a mid-size body-on-frame SUV, launched in China in September 2023 as the brand’s first plug-in-hybrid-only model, using GWM’s Hi4-T system for 408 hp and about 105 km of electric range. The Tank 700 arrived in 2024 as the new flagship, pairing a 3.0-litre V6 with an electric motor in the same Hi4-T layout, and GWM has said a V8 version is planned. A larger Tank 800 was previewed as a near-production concept in 2021; after years without further news, GWM confirmed in early 2026 that the model would finally reach production, with a Chinese launch planned for 2026 offering V8 and six-cylinder plug-in-hybrid options.

Tank vehicles are exported well beyond China. Since 2022 the brand has launched in Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, Mexico, South Africa and several Middle Eastern and Gulf markets, and the Tank 700 has reached Eurasia and Kazakhstan. As a GWM marque, Tank sits alongside Haval, Wey, Ora and Poer in the wider Great Wall Motor group.

Tank Logo Meaning

The Tank badge is built from two capital letters stacked into one shape: a T sitting over a U. GWM’s own brand materials describe the T as standing for Tank, for Technology and for Trend, while the U stands for “you” — the user — and for “united,” reflecting the brand’s stated approach of building vehicles together with its owners. The letters are drawn with flat, angular facets and a squared, three-dimensional look meant to suggest sheet metal and mechanical toughness, echoing the “hardcore off-road” positioning of the vehicles themselves. GWM sums up the intended feel as “iron-blooded tenderness,” pairing a tough, armoured shape with a brand message about care for the people who drive it. Underneath the T/U emblem, most markets also show the word TANK in a bold, geometric wordmark.

Tank Logo History and Evolution

Tank has used the same T-and-U emblem since it became an independent marque, with no publicly documented redesign to date.

GWM introduced this badge when it separated Tank from the Wey brand in March 2021. It combines a bold T, standing for Tank and Technology, with a U nested inside its lower half, standing for the user, rendered with angular, faceted edges rather than a smooth outline. It appears on the Tank 300, 400, 500 and 700, on the brand’s global and Chinese-market websites, and on dealership signage, above the TANK wordmark used in most markets outside China.

FAQ

Who owns Tank?

Tank is wholly owned by Great Wall Motor (GWM), one of China’s largest carmakers, based in Baoding, Hebei. It was created as GWM’s dedicated off-road marque in March 2021.

When was Tank founded?

Tank became an independent brand in March 2021, though its first model, the Tank 300, had already gone on sale under the Wey brand in December 2020.

What does the Tank logo mean?

The emblem combines a T, for Tank and Technology, with a U for the user, shaped with angular, metallic-looking facets meant to evoke off-road toughness.

What is the difference between Tank and Wey?

Both are marques of Great Wall Motor. Wey builds car-based crossovers aimed at urban buyers, while Tank builds body-on-frame, off-road-focused SUVs; the Tank 300 was originally sold as a Wey model before Tank split off in 2021.

What models does Tank make?

As of 2026 the lineup runs from the compact Tank 300 through the Tank 400 and full-size Tank 500 to the flagship Tank 700, all built on GWM’s dedicated off-road platform and offered with petrol, hybrid or plug-in hybrid powertrains depending on the market.
