Weichai Brand History

Weichai was founded in 1946 as Yucheng Ironworks in Weihai, Shandong Province, China. Early operations involved production under names including Coastal Ironworks and later relocation to Weifang where it became Dahua Machinery Factory in 1948. By 1953 the entity had been renationalized and officially renamed Weifang Diesel Engine Works under the Fourth Mechanical Industry Bureau.

The company progressed through several technological milestones that shaped its identity. In 1953 it launched the 6108 series diesel engine. Two years later it trial-manufactured the Czech 6160 diesel engine which became dominant for coastal fishing and shipping. During the 1960s it was recognized as one of the seventy Daqing-Type enterprises. Subsequent developments included the 6200 marine diesel engine in 1968 and an 800 hp 8V160 tank engine in 1970 that received a National Science Conference Prize in 1978.

Major modernization occurred in 1984 with the introduction of the Austrian Steyr WD615 heavy-duty vehicle engine. This established parallel development of medium and high-speed diesel engines. The WD615 passed national certification in 1989 and was identified as a new-generation product for construction machinery by 2000.

Corporate restructuring accelerated in the early 2000s. A major reform took place in 1998 under new management. Weichai Power Co. was incorporated in 2002, followed by a Hong Kong Stock Exchange listing in 2004 and a Shenzhen Stock Exchange listing in 2007, marking the first H to A share case. International expansion followed with the acquisition of Société Internationale des Moteurs Baudouin in France in 2009 and a majority stake in Ferretti Group in 2012 along with stakes in KION Group and Linde Hydraulics.

The Weichai symbol has been updated to support the organization’s broader identity under Weichai Holding Group. This includes its role as a state-owned enterprise under Shandong Heavy Industry with Chairman Tan Xuguang providing historical leadership context. The Weichai badge continues to represent the brand’s industrial heritage originating from its 1946 founding through subsequent renamings and technological achievements.

Logo variants have been documented in public archives including Weichai logo png and Weichai logo transparent background files.
