Brand Overview and Timeline

Navistar traces its origins to Cyrus McCormick who began mechanical harvesters in 1831. The International Harvester Company was formed by merger in 1902 and started truck production in 1912. An agricultural economic crisis in 1985 led to reorganization and the official adoption of the Navistar name in 1986.

Navistar became part of the Volkswagen Group in 2016 through TRATON SE. TRATON SE completed full ownership of the International Trucks subsidiary in 2021. The company has recently rebranded as International Motors and retired the Navistar name to return to its 1902 heritage branding.

1986 – 2008: Original Navistar Wordmark

Navistar logo
The first dedicated Navistar logo appeared immediately after the 1986 corporate renaming. This design reflected the new identity created during the reorganization from International Harvester.
  • Design: Stylized sans-serif uppercase wordmark with slanted geometric typeface and modified A letters featuring cut-out upper left diagonal bars.
  • Colors: Black and white.
  • Changes: Replaced all previous International Harvester marks with a completely new wordmark focused solely on the Navistar name.
  • Context: Introduced directly upon the 1985/1986 corporate renaming and reorganization.

2008 – Present: Current Navistar Wordmark

A modernization effort in 2008 produced the current Navistar logo that remains in use. The updated design conveys reliability, energy, motion, strength and modernity while blue represents trustworthiness.
  • Design: Bold italicized all-caps sans-serif typeface based on Helvetica Black Italic with custom modifications and a sharp white line crossing through both A letters.
  • Colors: Calm blue with monochrome variant available.
  • Changes: Replaced the earlier black-and-white slanted version with italic styling and the signature white blade element.
  • Context: Introduced as part of a modernization update while the company continued under the Navistar International name.

Recent: International Motors Rebrand

Navistar car logo
The latest rebrand retires the Navistar wordmark used since 1986 in favor of the heritage International name. The new mark returns to roots established in 1902 with International Harvester Company.
  • Design: Black silhouette road emblem formed by two triangles plus a bold angular all-caps wordmark.
  • Colors: Black color scheme.
  • Changes: Replaces the blue italic Navistar logo with a simplified road-themed emblem derived from historical vehicle badges.
  • Context: Reflects a strategic shift under Volkswagen Group ownership and emphasizes the streets, traffic flow and truck identity tied to the original International heritage.

The Navistar logo history illustrates consistent use of road and transport symbolism across decades. Early marks and the current International emblem both feature road or horizon line elements that connect directly to the company’s commercial vehicle focus. This evolution from the 1986 black-and-white slant through the 2008 blue blade version to the latest black road emblem shows how corporate milestones have shaped the visual identity.
