Lifan Brand History

Lifan was founded in 1992 by Yin Mingshan in Chongqing, China. The company originally operated as a motorcycle repair shop with nine employees. It was first named Chongqing Hongda Auto Fittings Research Centre before receiving its current name in 1997.

The name Lifan means “Great Sail” or “Power Sail.” This name change in 1997 to Lifan Industry Group established the sailing metaphor that became central to the brand identity. The company expanded into building buses in 2003 by acquiring Chongqing Special Purpose Use Vehicle Manufacturing Co Ltd.

In 2005 Lifan began independent automobile production. This marked a significant shift from its primary focus on motorcycles to full vehicle manufacturing. The brand has since concentrated on passenger cars, microvans, and continued motorcycle production.

Lifan Logo Evolution

1992–2005: Early Brand Symbol

Lifan logo

The early Lifan logo appeared following the 1992 founding and 1997 renaming. This design established the core visual elements tied to the brand name meaning of “Great Sail.” The emblem visually represented the company’s initial growth phase from motorcycle repairs to broader vehicle manufacturing.

  • Design: Horizontally placed oval with thick outline containing three abstract symbols resembling the letter L and stylized boat with sails of graduated sizes
  • Colors: Blue, red, and white palette
  • Changes: Introduction of the sail concept connected to the 1997 name change to Lifan Industry Group
  • Context: Used during the period when the company focused mainly on motorcycles before automobile production began in 2005

The current Lifan logo has been prominently used since the 2005 launch of automobile production and remains in use today. This version reinforced the brand values of progress and stability as the company expanded into passenger cars. The design directly connects the brand name origins with its evolution into a vehicle manufacturer.

  • Design: Horizontally placed oval with thick outline, inside three abstract L symbols styled as boat sails in graduated sizes, paired with LIFAN wordmark in custom italicized sans-serif typeface featuring an open A with triangular appearance
  • Colors: Traditional blue, red, and white that convey professional, energetic, and loyal qualities, with silver monochrome variant for vehicles
  • Changes: Refinement of the sail symbolism to align with the start of independent automobile production
  • Context: Applied as full logo with wordmark for general use and as silver emblem only on cars and motorcycles

The Lifan symbol features three sails of increasing then decreasing size that create an impression of growth, progress, and movement. Thick lines in the Lifan emblem communicate stability and reliability. These elements place customers at the center of the brand value system.

The Lifan logo meaning derives directly from the company name “Great Sail,” visualized through the stylized boat sails. This connection was established with the 1997 renaming and strengthened after the company entered automobile manufacturing. The design has provided a consistent visual identity across the brand’s expansion.

Lifan logo history reflects the manufacturer’s journey from a small motorcycle repair operation to a recognized vehicle producer. The enduring use of the sail-inspired emblem demonstrates how the 1997 name choice continues to shape the brand’s visual presentation. The logo design successfully captures the themes of forward movement and steadfast reliability.
