Volvo Logo Meaning, History and the Iron Mark

Sweden, founded 1927

The Volvo logo is the Iron Mark: a circle with an arrow angled up to the right, the ancient sign for iron. Adopted in 1926–27, it has been on Volvo grilles since 1927. It looks like the male symbol, but Volvo chose it for iron.

What does the Volvo logo mean?

The Volvo logo meaning is simple: the circle and its diagonal arrow form the ancient chemical sign for iron, which Volvo calls the Iron Mark. The Volvo symbol was chosen in 1926–27, when the company began building cars, and the Volvo emblem has been on the grille since series production started in 1927.

In a 2006 press release, Volvo explained that the badge was meant to evoke steel and the qualities that go with it: strength, safety, quality and durability. It was also a tribute to the Swedish iron industry, which later took up the same sign itself. That is why the Volvo logo has an arrow: the arrow is part of the old iron glyph, not a styling choice.

The Volvo symbol is borrowed from one of the oldest signs in Western culture. In ancient Rome it stood for the planet Mars and for Mars, the god of war, and so it came to mean iron, the metal most weapons were made of.

Is the Volvo logo a male symbol?

Yes, it is the same shape as the male symbol, but Volvo took it as the sign for iron. The glyph stood for Mars, and through Mars for iron, long before science reused it to mark the male sex. That shared origin is why the two look identical.

Volvo’s own texts put this in slightly different ways. The 2006 press release lists the masculine gender among the associations of the ancient symbol, next to Mars and iron. Volvo Cars’ Swiss website, by contrast, says the sign is often wrongly read as a symbol of masculinity. On the reason for the choice, both agree: the Iron Mark was picked for iron and Swedish steel.

Dealer pages that call the sign 5,000 years old, or date its male meaning to the Renaissance, give no source for either claim.

What is the diagonal stripe across the grille?

The diagonal bar started out as a part, not a decoration. On the first car, in April 1927, a metal strip running from the lower left to the upper right held the chrome iron badge in front of the radiator.

Over time the bar became purely decorative, and it is still the signature of every Volvo grille. Volvo now treats this “grille slash” as a trademarked brand symbol alongside the Iron Mark. When the mark was redrawn in 2014, its arrow was lined up with the slash.

What does Volvo mean? Is it Latin for “I roll”?

Volvo is Latin for “I roll”, the first-person singular of the verb volvere, “to roll.” The name is not an acronym and does not stand for anything. English words such as “revolver” come from the same Latin verb.

The name is older than the car company, and that Volvo meaning suited its first owner. The Swedish ball-bearing maker SKF registered the Volvo trademark on 11 May 1915 for a special series of bearings meant for the American market; one Wikipedia article gives May 1911 instead, but Volvo’s own history says 1915. According to Volvo, a member of SKF’s management suggested the word because it was simple, easy to pronounce in any country and hard to misspell. The idea was that it could cover everything that rolls: bearings, machines, transmissions, cars, bicycles and railway rolling stock.

The name was hardly used until the car project revived it. In 1924, SKF sales manager Assar Gabrielsson and engineer Gustaf Larson decided to build a Swedish car. In August 1926 SKF reactivated the Volvo name for it, and AB Volvo began operating on 10 August 1926. The first production car, the ÖV 4, left the assembly line in Lundby, Gothenburg, on 14 April 1927, the date Volvo counts as its birthday. “Jakob” was the nickname of one of the 1926 pre-series prototypes, not the name of the production car.

Yes, the Volvo logo has changed, but its core has not. The iron sign has been on Volvo grilles since 1927. What changed is the finish of the badge and the name banner across it, with three dated redesigns: 2006, 2014 and 2021. Older badges exist too, but no Volvo source dates them.

1927: the first Volvo logo on the ÖV 4 radiator

original Volvo logo, the 1927 trademark drawing of the ÖV 4 radiator with the iron sign

The first logo Volvo used, in 1927, was the iron sign itself, fixed to the radiator of the ÖV 4. A chrome badge carried the circle and arrow, and the diagonal bar held it in place. The name VOLVO was set in a slab-serif lettering that Volvo calls Egyptian.

When Volvo applied to register its logotype in 1927, the drawing, shown above, pictured the whole ÖV 4 radiator from the front, iron sign and arrow included. So the original trademark was a radiator, not a stand-alone oval badge.

Undated: the old Volvo logo with speed lines and a banner

old Volvo logo redrawn: the iron ring with three speed lines and an offset VOLVO plate

Two older badge designs show up in collections of the old Volvo logo, but no Volvo source dates them. Dealer pages describe one with VOLVO offset to the right and three lines behind the ring that suggest motion; the first image is a modern redrawing of it, so its colors are not a record of the original. Logo aggregators report that from 1959 the name sat on a bar across the middle of the ring. The second image is a real chrome grille badge of that design, but its exact year is not documented. Treat the dates and colors quoted for both badges as unconfirmed.

2006: the Iron Mark moves to the center

On 28 February 2006, Volvo Cars announced that a slightly modernized iron symbol would move from a less prominent position to the center of the grille. It also went on the center of the steering wheel, on the wheel hubs and on all communications material. This version of the Volvo logo had a metallic silver ring and a blue horizontal banner with white VOLVO letters.

2014: the 3D chrome Iron Mark

Volvo symbol from 2014, a three-dimensional chrome Iron Mark

This Volvo logo, a redrawn three-dimensional chrome Iron Mark, arrived in 2014 with the second-generation XC90 and stayed until 2021. The XC90 was revealed in August 2014 and reached showrooms in 2015, which is why Wikipedia dates this logo 2015–2021. The ring grew chunkier, the arrow larger, and the arrow now lined up with the slash across the grille. A narrower blue banner still carried the name. 2021: the new Volvo logo, a flat Iron Mark

new Volvo logo from 2021, a flat black Iron Mark with VOLVO across the circle

The new Volvo logo was revealed in September 2021. It is a flat, two-dimensional Iron Mark in black and white, with no chrome and no gradients. The blue banner is gone, the ring is slimmer, and the VOLVO letters run straight across the center of the circle.

Cars kept the older badge through 2022, and every new Volvo wore the flat one from 2023. Design Week reported that the mark was developed in-house by the design teams of Volvo Cars and Volvo Group. It is the current Volvo logo.

Two separate companies share the Volvo name and the Volvo logo, the Iron Mark. Volvo Cars builds cars and is majority-owned by China’s Geely Holding. AB Volvo, also known as Volvo Group, makes trucks, buses and construction equipment. Neither company owns the Volvo logo outright: a joint company, Volvo Trademark Holding AB, holds it for both.

The split dates from 1999, when AB Volvo sold its car division to Ford for about $6.5 billion. Both companies still needed the Volvo name, so as part of the sale it was placed in Volvo Trademark Holding AB. That company holds the Volvo name, the iron mark, the grille slash and the Volvo Penta brand. It licenses them to its owners and acts against counterfeits. AB Volvo and Ford were its 50/50 owners until Ford sold Volvo Cars in 2010. Today AB Volvo and Volvo Car Corporation own it in equal shares.

Where is Volvo from, and who owns it today?

Volvo is Swedish, but Volvo Cars has been owned by China’s Geely Holding since 2010. Volvo’s country of origin is Sweden: the company was founded in Gothenburg in 1927 as a subsidiary of the bearing maker SKF, and its head office is still in Torslanda, Gothenburg. It is not a German brand, and Volkswagen has never owned it.

Volvo Cars was part of AB Volvo until 1999. That year Ford bought it and placed it in its Premier Automotive Group with Jaguar, Aston Martin and Land Rover. In 2010 Ford sold Volvo Cars to Li Shufu’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group. The $1.8 billion deal was agreed on 28 March 2010 and closed on 2 August 2010, the largest overseas purchase by a Chinese carmaker up to that point.

So, is Volvo Chinese owned? Volvo Cars is. It listed on Nasdaq Stockholm in October 2021, Geely stayed in control, and in 2026 Geely holds about 79% of the shares (78.7% per Wikipedia). Ford no longer holds any stake. The truck and bus maker AB Volvo is a different story: Geely is only a minority shareholder there. For more brands from the same country, see Swedish car brands.

Volvo logo PNG, transparent and black-and-white versions

The Download button above gives you a Volvo logo PNG with a transparent background: the current flat Iron Mark in black, 1,728 × 1,728 pixels. Because the 2021 mark is flat and uses a single color, it works cleanly as a black and white logo.

  • Black: the version in our file, for light backgrounds.
  • White: for a Volvo logo in white on dark backgrounds, invert the black PNG or use the official Volvo PNG files in the Volvo Cars Media library.
  • Older versions: the silver-and-blue badges of 2006–2021 are not the current logo, so avoid them for present-day use.

For the wordmark alone, use the spread VOLVO lettering without the ring. It is also the logo on Volvo Group material. Other brands that pair a ring with an arrow are listed under car logos with circles and car logos with arrows.

Where the Volvo emblem appears on the car

Since 2006, the Volvo emblem has had three set places on the car: the grille, the steering wheel and the wheel hubs.

  • Grille: the Volvo car logo sits in the middle, on the diagonal slash that once held it in place.
  • Steering wheel: the iron symbol is at the center of the wheel.
  • Wheel hubs: the center of each wheel carries the mark.
  • Print and screens: the same mark appears in all of Volvo’s communications material.

A black-finish or sticker Volvo badge sold online is an aftermarket accessory, not an official version of the logo. Counterfeit Volvo badges are a known problem: pursuing them is one of the jobs of Volvo Trademark Holding.

Frequently asked questions

What does the word "volvo" mean in Swedish?

It has no everyday meaning in Swedish. Volvo is not a Swedish word: it is Latin, and a Swedish company, the bearing maker SKF, picked it as a brand name because it was short and easy to say abroad. In Sweden, too, it reads as a name. (The Swedish word for logo is logga.)

Was Volvo designed by a woman?

No source credits a woman with designing the Volvo logo or the first Volvo car. The logo is an ancient sign for iron that the founders, Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson, adopted in 1926–27. Its later updates are credited to design studios and to Volvo's in-house teams, and none of the published credits names a woman.

What font is the Volvo logo?

There is no public font name. Today's wordmark is Volvo's own letter-spaced "spread" VOLVO in capital letters: custom lettering, not a typeface you can buy or download. Volvo has not named any font as its source. Look-alike slab-serif fonts exist, but none of them is the official Volvo lettering.

What color is the Volvo logo?

Today it is black on white, or white on dark backgrounds, and nothing else: the flat 2021 Iron Mark dropped both the chrome and the blue banner. The silver ring with a blue name bar belongs to the 2006–2021 badges. Volvo gives no official meaning for its colors; "blue for stability" comes from dealer websites.

What is Volvo's slogan?

Volvo Cars' current brand line is "For Life," a brand platform the company launched in 2022 together with the EX90, according to marketing trade press. "Volvo for Life" had also been used as a global tagline years earlier, although the exact dates of that earlier campaign are not well documented.

Can I use the Volvo logo?

The Volvo name, the Iron Mark and the grille slash are trademarks held by Volvo Trademark Holding AB. Showing the logo to write about Volvo is common editorial practice, but putting it on products or your own branding needs permission. Volvo enforces its rights: in 1990 it sued a Hong Kong nightclub called Club Volvo. This is not legal advice.

What does ÖV 4 stand for?

ÖV 4 is short for Öppen Vagn 4 cylindrar, Swedish for "open car, 4 cylinders." It was Volvo's first production car and the first to wear the iron sign on its radiator. Production was small: Volvo Group puts the number of cars built in 1927 at about 280.
