Alpine Brand History

Société des Automobiles Alpine SAS was founded on 22 June 1955 by Jean Rédélé. The brand name Alpine originated in 1954 after Rédélé achieved successes in the Coupe des Alpes, inspiring the marque’s identity. The company’s first model, the A106, was developed with Chappe et Gessalin using Renault components.

Key milestones include production of the A108 Berlinette from 1958 to 1963, with manufacturing beginning in Brazil as the Willys Interlagos in 1962. The A110 Berlinette Tour de France arrived in 1963. In 1968 Alpine received a full Renault competition budget, leading to the brand’s greatest motorsport achievements.

Renault fully acquired Alpine in 1973, the same year the A110 secured the World Rally Championship. The competition department merged into Renault Sport in 1976. The Renault Alpine A442B triumphed at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1978. The brand was phased out in 1995 with the final A610 produced on 7 April.

The Alpine brand returned in 2017 with the launch of a new A110. Renault Sport merged into the Alpine business unit in 2021. In 2024 Alpine began its transition to an electric vehicle brand with the A290 and announced plans for North American market entry in 2027.
